Restoration of the Long Gallery in a Georgian mansion hotel: Wallmotion Abstract, recoloured to evoke Scottish skies, creates a trompe-l’oeil sense of depth.
Balbirnie House is a Georgian mansion set in parkland in Fife, between Edinburgh and St Andrews. Operating as a hotel since 1989, it is one of Scotland's best-known wedding venues, and its Long Gallery, with Italianate architecture and ornate ceilings, is among its signature rooms.
The gallery was restored in 2024. The key material was Muraspec Wallmotion Abstract LTD02110, custom-recoloured by Muraspec's bespoke team in the moody tones of Scottish skies. Its trompe-l'oeil effect adds depth, so the room reads differently by day and by evening, while the commercial-grade construction suits heavy use.
The wallcovering is complemented by carpet inspired by the estate's ancient parkland, new furniture and a lighting scheme. A second phase refreshed the Pearl Suite, a dedicated bridal preparation suite.
