Crowne Plaza Budapest: 10,000 linear metres of wallcovering in one hotel

A 230-room renovation: how Tremend tied lobby, rooms and meeting spaces together with one material and met IHG standards.

The brief

The 230-room Crowne Plaza Budapest was renovated to a design by Tremend. Every space had to tell its own story about the city — for instance, referencing the railway station built by Gustave Eiffel’s company in the 19th century — while wallcoverings had to meet IHG’s fire safety and antimicrobial requirements.

The solution

Walls and ceilings became the element that ties the hotel together. In the lobby, vivid Muraspec digital murals sit next to the warm wood texture of Strataflex Walnut; rooms, corridors and ceilings use subdued textured wallcoverings for an intimate feel.

The project used more than 10,000 linear metres of Muraspec, mostly on an antimicrobial backing. The renovation earned Tremend a Muse Design Award.

Takeaways for your project

  • Digital print creates a signature lobby wall, while textured wallcoverings in rooms take the wear and stay in the background.
  • Wood-texture Strataflex replaces veneer where easy care and a fire certificate are needed.
  • Specify the fire class and an antimicrobial backing from the start — international chains require it.

Muraspec, including Strataflex and acoustic wallcoverings, is in the Domus Regia catalogue.
